As per the anti-burqa bill tabled by Italy’s anti-immigrant North League Party, wearing burqa in Italy will be punishable by a year in prison, fines of 150 to 300 Euros for the wearer and 30,000 Euros for anyone forcing a woman to don the face-covering Islamic garment.

Following the footprints of France, where the law has become that woman will be fined or jailed for covering their faces in public; Italy is likely to ban the wearing of the veil by Muslim women.

Carolina Lussana, Northern League Member of Parliament, said that the bill represented a step forward because it not only creates a problem of Public order but also is an offence to women’s dignity.

She also said that as per law constituted in the constitution, it is violation of the principle of equality between men and women.

The copy of the bill which was handed to the reporters also read that anyone coercing a minor or a disabled woman into wearing a burqa will be eligible for a 60,000-euro fine. Moreover, if a woman wears burqa of her own volition then 150-300 euro fine imposed on her could be only reduced if she agreed to do community service aimed at better integrating Muslim immigrants.

However, the bill is likely to face criticism from Muslim immigrants in Italy but as per report of the survey that was conducted recently by Panel Data, nearly 73 percent of Italians believe the burqa should not be allowed to be worn in public places.
