In the wake of the suicide committed by the Kolkata student, the city schools as well as the schools all over the country has been given ultimatum by the respective state courts to devise steps to curb this menace.

Following the instructions of the court, some schools have issued advisories to teachers asking them to strictly refrain from physical punishment while others are deliberating on different ways to discipline students.

On close survey, the heated topic of discussion amongst the students and the debating society of the school is ‘Effect of Corporal Punishment’. As per report of the surveyors, ”It’s embarrassing if a teacher singles us out.” Naturally, when they asked the students if caning or hitting students is right, pat came the reply, in chorus – a vehement ‘No’.

The survey has also found many teachers against corporal punishments who said that stringent action inevitably makes one lose his position as an able teacher.

It also puts a question mark on the school and the security it offers.

Well, it seems that the old adage ’spare the rod and spoil the child’ is being turned on its head. Further teachers, parents and students all are ready to compromise with discipline which comes at the cost of somebody’s life.
