HRD panel recommends 70% weightage to Class XII marks in IIT-JEE

HRD ministry panel suggested 70% weightage to be given to Standard XII marks and 30% for scoring in the aptitude test for the IIT-Joint Entrance Examination.

Damodar Acharya, director of IIT Kharagpur who heads the panel gave a report to the HRD minister Kapil Sibal on Wednesday recommending the aptitude test to be conducted more than a year which will be helpful to students.

The aptitude test will be an additional test which will have questions on reasoning, communication skills and numerical ability from the subjects’ mathematics, chemistry and physics. The best score from this attempt will be taken into account.

Based on the Class XII marks and the aptitude test appeared for, a list will be made in the month of June every year and the top 40000 aspirants will have to write an additional test for entrance to IITs. At present strength of more than 40000 candidates appear to write IIT-JEE in single test. The panel has also put a restriction on the number of times it can be taken.

Keeping aside the present system routine, the students at the initial stage will have to let know their choice of IIT or any other institutes and also their choice of engineering stream or science branch where they seek to get admission through JEE examination.

HRD sources said in a statement that the ministry’s initial responsibility would be to bring in par the CBSE and state boards by introducing a “comprehensive weighted performance index” so that there is equality among them and students do not face any issues. The heavy mathematics and science syllabus is already raised for discussion by the HRD ministry and the same is approved by the Council of Board of Secondary Education. The source further said that “The move will ensure that students from small towns and even those who cannot afford expensive coaching can aim to be in IITs”.

Motorola and HTC face a tough competition with Apple IPhone which brings out excellent features and a high powered mobile, based on Google Inc’s Android software. Last week because of huge demand for IPhone4 Apple officials felt sorry for holding the sales temporarily due to rise in online order crossing beyond the limit and approval systems and supplies ran out, unable to complete the task on time.

Pakistan court orders ban on Google, Yahoo, Hotmail, 6 other websites

Nine leading websites including giants Google and Yahoo have been reportedly banned by a Pakistani High Court for allegedly putting blasphemous content on their pages. Officials said on Wednesday that they are yet to receive any intimidation about blocking the sites.

According to the media reports, nine websites including Google, Yahoo, MSN, Hotmail, YouTube, were accused of posting sacrilegious and blasphemous material by a Lahore High Court. The Court has ordered Pakistan Telecommunication Authority to block the websites with immediate effect. A man named Muhammad Sidiq had filed a petition in the court claiming that these websites were publishing blasphemous material. Sidiq had sought for banning of these websites in his petition. Justice Mazher Iqbal Sidhu heard the petition along with issuing orders to ban these websites.

Spokesman for the Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan, Wahaj-us-Siraj said that the organization had not received any orders to block the websites. Officials of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority have also said the same, stating that they had read the news about blocking of these websites only through the media and no official orders had been relayed to them yet. Head of a local bar association; Aslam Dhakkar welcomed the Court’s decision saying that the legal fraternity in Bahawalpur would be observing a day’s strike to protest the publication of blasphemous material.

In May, Pakistani authorities blocked the social networking site Facebook. The access to the site was later restored.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority chairman has been ordered by the judge to appear before the courts on June 28 with appropriate documents.

Even daddy can’t recognise Priyanka

In an upcoming film, actress Priyanka Chopra will be playing all the different stages of a woman’s life from right from 18 years to 65. Probably what should act as testimony to her acting and make up, her father Dr. Ashok Chopra couldn’t recognize Priyanka in her old woman get up!

Professional make up artists have been brought from Australia for creating Priyanka’s different looks in Vishal Bhardwaj’s, Saat Khoon Maaf. A source confirmed that while shooting for the film, Priyanka was missing her parents and couldn’t contact them over the phone because of network blackout. Thus she asked them to come over to the sets to visit her. Priyanka was shooting a scene, acting as a 65 year woman, the day her parents visited the sets. It is said that Dr. Chopra was absolutely dumbstruck upon seeing Priyanka and failed to recognize her.

In his own words, “I could not recognise Priyanka. I actually went up very close to her to ensure she is the same Priyanka. The make-up artist had done such a fabulous job with her that she looked much older than her mother. Right from her face to her wrinkled hands and feet, she had been transformed into an old woman.”

Priyanka’s father was absolutely proud of her daughter’s acting saying that she did complete justice to the role, completely blending in with the age of the character without any overacting.

Online CAT test to undergo changes for effective usage

US based Prometric, a testing firm which collaborated with an Indian firm for giving supportive software facilities and handling the exam centres for conduct of the test, had caused server problems in last test CAT 2009 version, which was not in a smooth process thereby resulting in, the students being unable to perform their test on the given dates.

The newly developed online version of Common Admission Test (CAT) was a gateway for many aspirants to The Indian Institutes of Management which failed to glide in the last year examination conducted. In spite facing such situations the management schools have agreed to continue their contract with Prometric but instructing them to ensure proper functioning of the test thereafter.

IIM-Bangalore and Ahmedabad was entrusted with the responsibility of holding the test which has been passed to IIM Lucknow and Calcutta.

Himanshu Rai, CAT 2010 convenor confirmed saying that the latest version CAT 2010 will be conducted in the online format itself and he added saying that “The CAT 2010 will undergo changes so that students don’t face the same problems that aspirants had to deal with the last time CAT was held”.

IIM faculty staff said they have informed the Prometric channel to ensure this time all computers be well-protected against virus attacks. The normal written test procedure of CAT since 33 years had been modified into online version from 2009 with the exam being scheduled from November 27 to December 7.

During this period, the aspirants had faced online problems, servers being unable to shoulder their burden. The IIM’s had to conduct re-test on January 30 and 31 for 11000 students who faced the situation which later delayed the publication of results.
